This is normally somewhere between -1 and You balance the input signal against the ceiling, possibly increasing overall level, while trying not to push the limiter too hard. When the signal surpasses the ceiling, it runs into a brick wall, and is unable to go beyond that value. What happens during this process is that the analog reconstruction can actually peak beyond the digital sample values in the DAW—these are the true peaks.

A quality true peak limiter can help you rest assured that no clipping is getting past your mix bus. The free limiter by Kilohearts is a really simple and easy-to-use plugin. It has input and output gain, a threshold, and a release, as well as a resizable GUI and some handy presets to get up and running fast. Limiter No. This is a clipping style limiter for subtle and transparent dynamic control to hard clipping distortion. Certain features, like frequency-specific limiting, are paid-only, but the free version has plenty to play with.

The Margin field shows the highest output level. Release knob and field: Set the time it takes for Limiter to stop processing, after the signal falls below the threshold level.

Lookahead knob and field: Adjust how far ahead in milliseconds Limiter analyzes the audio signal. This enables it to react earlier to peak volumes by adjusting the amount of reduction. Note: Lookahead causes latency, but this has no perceptible effect when you use Limiter as a mastering effect on prerecorded material.

Set it to higher values if you want the limiting effect to occur before the maximum level is reached, thus creating a smoother transition. Mode pop-up menu: Choose between Legacy and Precision algorithms. Unlimited is a freeware mastering limiter released in by Sonic Anomaly. It automatically adjusts to the type of audio signal on the input, reducing the overall CPU hit if a stereo signal is detected.

In practice, Unlimited blows away most of the competition with its highly transparent sound and intuitive controls. The processing quality is second to none, with a much faster workflow and a convenient control scheme. The single negative thing about Unlimited is that it is only compatible with Windows-based digital audio workstations.

Other than that, Unlimited is one of the best mastering tools around and an absolute must-have for Windows users. The real-time waveform display with gain reduction metering is particularly useful for fine-tuning the threshold value. This excellent freeware limiter plugin for PC and Mac features only two control parameters threshold and output volume , yet it manages to deliver fantastic sounding results on a wide variety of mixes.

LoudMax is optimized for highly transparent limiting and preserving the original character of the source signal even at extremely high compression settings. The limiting workflow could hardly get any simpler than what you get with LoudMax. The vertical gain reduction meter on the right will help you visualize the amount of limiting that is being applied to the signal, but the key is to use your ears and try to detect any audible signs of pushing the limiter too high.

LoudMax is easily one of the most frequently used VST plugins in my arsenal. Another great thing about LoudMax is that it still receives updates on a fairly regular basis. The updates often include performance optimizations and improvements to the limiting algorithm. Frontier is a versatile mixing limiter developed by D16 Group. The plugin excels as a tracking limiter, allowing you to boost the loudness of individual tracks and prevent clipping.

You can use Frontier to bring out the finer details in audio recordings or to level out highly dynamic tracks in a mix. It works great on the drum bus, percussion, and bass guitars. Frontier also works well as a limiter on the master channel.

Set the release to fast and slowly reduce the threshold to catch the volume peaks. The soft clipper on the output helps to prevent transient peaks without pushing the limiter too hard. Pay attention to the processing quality when rendering your project. Adjust the desired processing quality by accessing the menu in the lower-right corner.

Higher audio quality means that more CPU will be used for limiting. Even though it is one of the oldest plugins on the list released around , W1 Limiter is still under development and is expected to include real-time metering features in the final version. Both plugins consume barely any CPU resources and are highly recommended for tracking and less demanding limiting tasks.

Unlike LoudMax, W1 Limiter offers direct control over the release time parameter, which might be beneficial in some situations. An adaptive release switch is also included for setting the plugin to fully automatic mode. Windows users with bit DAWs are also out of luck for now. The interface features threshold and ceiling controls, along with a three-way switch for choosing the appropriate limiting mode loud, normal, smooth depending on the audio source. The limiter plugins listed above are the ones we believe are the best that you can get for free.

However, there are many other freeware limiters out there and chances are that you might prefer something else. The bonus section below features an additional set of freeware limiters that you can try for yourself and see if they fit your workflow better. This basically means if the True Peak button isn’t engaged your mix might still be clipping without you knowing it. Why is this important? First off clipping isn’t good even if you write music that is heavy on the distortion front, but the other reason is that broadcast by law in many countries now dictates that music levels do not exceed a set level and that ‘Overs’ MUST be kept below the standardised level.

It sounds confusing but without going into a more detailed tutorial the simple solution is engage the True Peak button if your music is heading for broadcast and Logic will just about do the rest for you! Having said this with true peak engaged it can apply more limiting to ensure no overs occur so only use TP limiting when your music is being prep’d for broadcast. If your music isn’t going to be hitting the airwaves then you might not need to activate the TP button and thus your music will be limited to a lesser degree than if the button is switched on.

Nov 1, AM in response to Professor AR In response to Professor AR From the user manual: “Limiter Limiter works much like a compressor but with one important difference: where a compressor proportionally reduces the signal when it exceeds the threshold, a limiter reduces any peak above the threshold to the threshold level, effectively limiting the signal to this level.
